About Us

The City of Stone Mountain is situated comfortably in outer East Metro Atlanta, sixteen miles from downtown, in DeKalb County. We are an exurban community with natural beauty, small-city charm, and true Southern spirit.

Our 185th Anniversary is Coming in 2024!

Our City was incorporated as “New Gibraltar” in 1839. It wasn’t renamed “Stone Mountain” until almost a decade later, in 1847.

Our community has always been a hub of life in DeKalb County. We hosted Georgia’s first ever agricultural fair in 1846. By 1890 the City of Stone Mountain was the second largest urban center in the county, and nearly became the county seat.

Granite was mined in and around the City for almost a century. Stone from area quarries helped rebuild Atlanta after the Civil War, with mining only coming to an end during the Great Depression.
